The Smithtown Fire Department was toned out for a 16-23 (Ambulance Requested/Motor Vehicle Accident) at 08:52 (8:52am) on October 5 with the location of a pond on Route 25A and Summerset Drive. Upon arrival Smithtown Chief of Department Murphy (4-2-30) observed a vehicle in a pond at the location with a female driver trapped. He immediately upgraded the call to a heavy rescue/water rescue. The Smithtown Fire Department was toned out for a 16/23 (motor vehicle accident) at 16:32 (4:32 pm) with the location of Veterans Highway and Route 347. The accident involved two vehicles that hit each other head on.   The drivers of both vehicles and passengers were able to self-extricate themselves. The Smithtown Fire Department was toned out for a signal 13 (Chimney Fire) on Monday, February 08 with the location of 35 Ramondo Lane. With no active fire found the Department continued to investigate a heavy odor of smoke. Thermal Imagining cameras identified a hot spot behind the wall of the fireplace.   Firefighters removed brick above the fireplace to isolate the problem.   With episodes of cold weather upon us more and more homeowners in Smithtown are beginning to use their fireplaces.

On December 9, 2015 the Smithtown Fire Department responded to a cardiac arrest at Gold’s Gym at 100 Landing Avenue. Jeff Press, a Hauppauge resident who was working out, suffered a cardiac arrest in the weight area of the gym. The Smithtown Fire Department responded to five calls in thirty minutes time late in the afternoon of February 16. It took close to twenty fire and EMS personnel to answer the alarms.   A few years ago the Smithtown Fire Department acquired their 1935 Mack Ladder truck that was last used by the Melville Fire Department.   For the past year a ground up restoration has been underway in Maine.    A review of the February response statistics show that the Smithtown Fire Department responded to 296 alarms. Of these calls, 185 were ambulance responses while 111 were fire or rescue alarms.   With a few heavy snowfalls in February, the Department kept busy with numerous responses to weather-related motor vehicle accidents and electrical and communication wires down.   The Department also supplied a mutual aid ambulance to Port Jefferson in response to the  Piper small plane crash.

Several times each year the Smithtown Fire Department holds refresher drills to reinforce and relearn important rescue skills. On Monday, March 8, the Department held an air bag and cribbing refresher.
